3.0.19 Garnishments, Tax Levies, And Wage Assignments
DEFINITION(S)
Garnishment | A court order served against the employee which directs the university to withhold and remit wages to the court on behalf of a staff member. The University is liable for the payment if the court order is not followed. The amount withheld is in accordance with the Federal law. |
Tax Levy | An order directing the University to withhold and remit wages otherwise due a staff member. The amount withheld is in accordance with the Federal/State law and continues each pay until the tax liability is paid in full. The university is liable for the payment if the order is not followed. |
Assignment of Wages | A Friend of the Court assignment of wages for child support that must be honored by the university. The university is required to deduct a specific court ordered amount until notified by the Friend of the Court to change the amount or to cease deducting. |
POLICY
University personnel are expected to manage their personal financial affairs in a manner, which excludes university involvement.
However, garnishments, tax levies, and other collection devices are NOT considered by the University to be a cause for discipline or discharge.
